KEEPING YOUR LAWN FLOOD FREE

Drainage Solutions For All Landscapes

Unfortunately, drainage issues are quite common in yards. Whether you live in an area that’s prone to flooding or your yard slopes downward toward your basement, it’s important to address drainage issues from the get-go to prevent flooding, structural issues, mold and erosion. Yard drainage refers to the way the soil handles the distribution of water. Water accumulation on your property, regardless of where it is, can lead to structural issues, to be sure. But it can also kill your plants and act as a breeding ground for mosquitoes and bacteria.

There are many solutions that can remedy these problems, such as French drains and permeable pavers. Here at Twelve Oaks Landscape, we specialize in installation of all types of drainage systems. We would be happy to visit your property, examine the problem, diagnose the issue and provide an estimate on the cost and type of work needed. You have many options at your disposal, and we’ll work with you to find the right one for your unique property. Let’s go more in-depth on some of the options.

What We Can Do

At Twelve Oaks Landscape, we have many years of in-the-trenches (literally!) experience installing all types of drainage systems that address problems common to North Alabama and surrounding areas. Most homeowners don’t pay much attention to the drainage in their yard until it’s too late, such as after a big storm. Most people focus on other areas of their home when considering home improvement projects to enhance value. In reality, the creation of proper yard drainage is one of the most important components of any landscaping installation project, and indeed home improvement project.

Not only will yard drainage system installation prevent water and flood damage both inside and out, it will also control erosion. In fact, a properly designed and installed drainage system collects water from downspouts and gutters and pulls it away from your house, preventing soggy yards and expensive erosion problems.

Our team uses and trusts the EZ Flow Drainage System along with retaining walls to effectively manage any drainage problems or erosion control issues.

How Do You Know You Have Drainage Issues?

While flooding is certainly an obvious sign, some symptoms of poor drainage are not as noticeable. Let’s go over the top five signs that you have problems with the drainage system on your property.

  • Puddles — If your lawn is too wet to walk through even when it’s been days since the last rainfall, your soil has poor drainage capabilities. Water that puddles rather than absorbs into the ground signals a major drainage issue that should be addressed.
  • Water accumulation on driveway — When water has nowhere else to go, it creeps onto your hardscapes like patios and driveways, where puddles form. This is an annoyance and a safety issue, not to mention it’s doing a number on the asphalt.
  • Droopy vegetation — If you notice moss growing around your yard, dying grass, or limp plants and bushes, these are signs of over-watering. Common in low drainage areas, the roots sit in too much water, leading to root rot.
  • Backed-up gutters — Free-flowing water needs obstruction-free gutters in order to drain off the roof and away from the property efficiently. When clogged with debris, your gutters impede the flow of water. If your yard already has drainage issues, the water flowing down the gutters is unable to seep into the ground, resulting in water that backs up in the gutters. If you don’t fancy spending lots of money on roof repairs, foundation problems and flooding, check your gutters first.
  • Mosquitoes — If you’re seeing an influx in mosquitoes, standing water is likely to blame. That’s because mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water, putting your family at risk for disease.

Permeable Pavers

Permeable interlocking concrete pavers (PICP) feature layers of stone or aggregate underneath in which the rainwater can filter. The water can easily pass to the underground aquifers in an effort to drain more efficiently. Any rain that falls on your driveway, walkway or patio is able to reabsorb into the ground. If you want to take things a step further, you can harvest that water for washing your car or sprinkling your lawn. Thus, you can eliminate standing water as well as eliminate hassle with less grass to water, feed, cut and maintain.

Permeable pavers tend to last much longer than their standard cousins, which means your investment goes even further. You can choose from a variety of styles and colors to complement the rest of your property.

French Drains

A French drain, quite simply, is a pipe that collects water and directs it away from your home. It all has to do with gravity: Water flows downhill. Your yard is flat. It stands to reasons that water will accumulate where you least want it: right at your foundation. Installing a sloped trench filled with gravel will encourage that water to flow away from the house. The main purpose of this system is to avoid erosion and other damage to your property, particularly your foundation and basement.

A French drain is inserted into the ground to collect rain water, typically required in yards and basements that suffer ongoing drainage problems. The drain takes excess water to low-lying areas where it can do the least damage. The pipe itself is wide, perforated with holes, and angles downward under the ground. A layer of gravel is placed on top, which encourages smoother flow of water than dense soil. Interesting side note: you may think this drain was named after the country in which it was invented. Not so. According to HouseLogic, it was named after Henry French, a judge and farmer in Concord, Massachusetts, who raved about his revolutionary idea in an 1859 book about farm drainage.
